Verge Trees in Canning Bridge Petition
COMMUNITY WIN - January 2025
I am pleased to share an exciting update on this matter for the community.
Planning Minister John Carey has confirmed that the Cook Labor Government has formally protected the Applecross verge trees.
This announcement establishes a new reduced Planning Control Area (PCA) in Canning Bridge which excludes private land and mature verge trees which were previously at risk from future road widening.
In response to the community campaign which I publicly led, the updated PCA 185 protects the existing tree canopy along Sleat, Forbes and Kintail Road.
This outcome is a direct result of listening to my community and acting to represent you.

MINISTER'S UPDATE - JULY 2024
In July 2024 the Honourable John Carely MLA, Minister for Planning, wrote to confirm that there is no longer any Public Transport Authority or Main Roads WA requirement for works, including tree removal on Forbes Road, Sleat Road and Kintail Road.
The Minister has confirmed that the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage have commenced the process of amending Planning Control Area 153, which will remove the planned road widening along these streets.

COMMUNITY UPDATE!
18th April 2023
The Minister for Planning, Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA supports the views of the community with respect to protecting the trees along Sleat, Forbes and Kintail Roads.
The Minister is committed to working closely with me to retain these trees and has asked her agencies to review the need for widening these roads.
This is a positive step for our community – and for our campaign to save the verge trees along Sleat, Forbes and Kintail roads.
In June 2024 Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA passed on my letter to Hon John Carey, the new Minister for Planning for further consideration.

Background - March 2023
It has come to my attention that the verge trees on Forbes Road, Sleat Road, and Kintail Road in Applecross may be at risk. These local streets have been identified for potential future road widening.
These trees are the heart and soul of what makes Applecross a special place to live.
I recently wrote to Minister Saffioti seeking protection for the trees.
